Learn more about the AL All-Star candidates at designated hitter:
Nelson Cruz (MIN): 6-time All-Star (2 starts)
Cruz is bidding for his third straight All-Star appearance and sixth in the last seven seasons. He’s missed some time this year, but he’s putting up a slugging percentage over .500 for the seventh year in a row. Cruz is one of just three players to start at DH multiple times for the AL, ranking behind only David Ortiz (five) and Edgar Martinez (four).
J.D. Martinez (BOS): 2-time All-Star (1 start)
Martinez is bidding to be the first player to start back-to-back All-Star Games at DH for the AL since Nelson Cruz in 2014 and ‘15. While his numbers are down a bit from ‘18, he is still slugging well over .500 and is closing in on 20 homers as he tries to crack 40 for the third straight year.
Hunter Pence (TEX): 3-time All-Star (0 starts)
Pence has been making a very strong play for Comeback Player of the Year, although he is currently on the injured list with a groin strain. He is slashing .294/.353/.608 -- giving him the highest slugging percentage of his 13-year career. Pence’s 15 homers already are his most since 2014, the last time he was an All-Star.
