Learn more about the AL All-Star candidates at shortstop:
Carlos Correa (HOU): 1-time All-Star (1 start)
After a down year in 2018 when he dealt with a back injury, Correa was off to a far better start in ‘19 before being sidelined with a fractured rib. In 50 games this season, the 24-year-old is batting .295/.360/.547 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.
Jorge Polanco (MIN): Has not been named to an All-Star team
Polanco has been key to Minnesota’s runaway AL Central lead, and he could be the first Twins shortstop to start an All-Star Game since Roy Smalley in 1979. A legitimate AL MVP candidate, Polanco is leading the AL in batting average, slugging well over .500 and is already close to his career high of 13 home runs set in 2017.
Gleyber Torres (NYY): 1-time All-Star (0 starts)
A lot of pressure comes with playing shortstop in the Bronx -- Derek Jeter was the last Yankee to start an All-Star Game at the position -- but Torres is up to the task (although Didi Gregorius’ recent return has pushed him back to second base). After a strong debut season in 2018, Torres has continued to improve in ‘19, raising his slugging percentage considerably and approaching the 20-homer mark.
