PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter got scratched from his third MLB start on Sunday afternoon because of a migraine. The team announced that right-handed reliever Zach Pop would start instead. Pop went scoreless in the first inning before giving up a run in the second.
Painter entered the game to start the third.
Painter, 23, was in the clubhouse before Sunday’s series finale against Arizona at Citizens Bank Park, sitting at his locker and preparing for the game. He didn’t step on the field until after the Phillies’ announcement, which came just before 1 p.m. ET before a scheduled 1:35 p.m. ET first pitch.
The Phillies' No. 2 prospect eventually made his way to the Phillies’ bullpen.
Painter is 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA in his first two starts. He pitched well in his MLB debut on March 31 against Washington before struggling in his second start on Monday against the Giants in San Francisco.
