Angels open season in Houston, head to Trout's hometown after break

August 13th, 2019

ANAHEIM -- The Angels released their 2020 schedule on Monday, with the 60th season in franchise history opening March 26 in Houston, while the home opener takes place April 3 against the same Astros team.

The first 13 games of the season will be against American League West rivals, with 18 total April games against division foes, including two trips to Houston.

In Interleague Play, the Angels will host to the Washington Nationals (May 11-13), Miami Marlins (June 9-10), Los Angeles Dodgers (July 10-11) and New York Mets (Aug. 18-20). The Angels’ Interleague travel includes stops in Miami (April 14-15), Atlanta (July 3-5), Philadelphia (July 17-19) and up the freeway against Dodgers (Aug. 25-26).

The Angels will have an extended five-day All-Star break, which starts Sunday, July 12, following a Friday-Saturday series against the Dodgers. The second half will begin at Philadelphia, in close proximity to the Millville, N.J., hometown of slugger Mike Trout.

“I glanced at it more from a travel perspective, what National League cities we were going to,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “But that’s it. More of a cursory glance.”

Ausmus said he was most curious about travel requirements. The longest trip of the season is an early 11-day jaunt from April 9-19 with stops at Detroit, Miami and Houston. But it includes three off-days. The trip after the All-Star break will consist of 10 games in 10 days at Philadelphia, New York (Yankees) and Texas.

It will be the fourth consecutive season the Angels have started the season on the road and the first time they have opened in Houston. The Angels close the season on a six-game homestand (Sept. 22-27) against the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics.
