ANAHEIM -- Right-hander Parker Bridwell is back with the Angels. The club re-claimed him on waivers from the Yankees on Friday after losing him via the same process to New York on Nov. 26.
Bridwell, 27, was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Monday, and the Angels claimed him back on waivers, which filled the final spot of their 40-man roster. They'll have to clear a spot for right-hander Matt Harvey once his one-year deal becomes official.
The club is hoping for a bounce-back year from Bridwell, who allowed 13 runs in 6 2/3 innings with the Angels in 2018 and saw his season end early due to surgery that removed loose bodies from his elbow. But he was impressive as a rookie in '17, going 10-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 20 starts and a relief appearance.
After the additions of Trevor Cahill and Harvey this week, Bridwell is likely to be a reliever in 2019. The Angels are expected to have a rotation of Andrew Heaney, Tyler Skaggs, Harvey, Cahill and Jaime Barria, with other potential starters in the mix including Nick Tropeano, Felix Pena and Dillon Peters.
Bridwell is out of Minor League options, so he must make the 25-man roster out of Spring Training or else he'll need to be exposed to waivers once again.
