The Angels haven’t made the postseason since 2014, when the team won the AL West. That was the last full season Jerry Dipoto was the general manager, and he left the team mid-2015, the last season the franchise finished with a winning record.

Now it will be up to a new general manager, Perry Minasian, to turn things around. He was announced as the man hired to replace Billy Eppler, who got the job in October after Dipoto left, inheriting a team that went 26-34 in 2020. That will earn Minasian and his staff the No. 9 pick in the 2021 Draft, the third time in the past five years the team will pick in the top 10.

The Angels got Reid Detmers 10th overall last year, and he's the kind of college lefty who could move very quickly through the system, especially after impressing with his work at the alternate training site this past summer. Back in 2017, the Angels also picked No. 10, selecting high school outfielder Jo Adell. Yes, Adell strugged in his big league debut in 2020, but his future is just as bright as it was before the season.

The overall system has made incremental growth, via the Draft and international signings. There’s a lot of athleticism and raw ability, though it’s still relatively far away. The recent additions did allow the organization to move from No. 26 before the start of the 2020 season up to No. 21 during our midseason farm system re-rank.

Trade: Packy Naughton, LHP (No. 12)

The Angels didn’t have a second-round pick in 2020, but they were able to add three Top 30 prospects to the fold, starting with Detmers, who could get to the big leagues in a hurry. Naughton was the main return in the deal that sent Brian Goodwin to the Reds, a lefty who could fit into the back end of the rotation at some point in 2021.

2021 IMPACT PROSPECT

Brandon Marsh, OF: Adell spent the 2020 season in the big leagues (and struggled). He should be joined by his buddy Marsh, who will undoubtedly be protected on the 40-man roster this offseason, at some point in 2021. Where the opportunity will come remains to be seen, with Adell, Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Taylor Ward already in the rotation, but look for Marsh to hit his way into that group.

2022 TOP PROSPECT

Jordyn Adams, OF: By 2022, Marsh will have graduated, so he can be replaced at the top of the list by another gifted outfielder with tools. Perhaps first-rounder Detmers will give Adams a run here (or could be in the big leagues), but expect Adams to take another step forward in his development with a relatively normal season’s worth of reps.

The Angels are tied for third with 13 international signees (trailing only the Mets and Yankees), led by D’Shawn Knowles (No. 8) and Arol Vera (No. 9). Neither Livan Soto (No. 19) nor Kevin Maitan (No. 24) has produced much since the Angels signed them following them becoming free agents in the wake of the Braves international signing scandal, but it should be noted both are just 20 years old.
