ANAHEIM -- Manipulation of the Angels' 40-man roster continued on Wednesday, with Minor League third baseman Jefry Marte acquired from the Tigers and Minor League second baseman Ronald Torreyes, added two days earlier, designated for assignment in order to clear a roster spot.
Marte, who played in 33 games for the Tigers last season, was acquired for second-base prospect Kody Eaves, previously ranked 22nd in the Angels' system by MLB.com. He represents the 18th player added to the Angels' 40-man roster by new general manager Billy Eppler this offseason.

Ten of the men on that 40-man roster were either plucked off waivers, selected in the Rule 5 Draft, designated for assignment or non-tendered by their former clubs at some point this winter. The Angels have been more than willing to take a chance on those players to satisfy their need for position-player depth in Triple-A and the Major Leagues.
Torreyes has now been designated for assignment three times in the last 15 days -- by the Dodgers, Yankees and Angels. But the 23-year-old right-handed hitter has an outright remaining, so the Angels can stash him in the Minors if he clears waivers.
Marte, who has options left, is a career .259/.325/.387 hitter in the Minor Leagues and can also play some first base. The 6-foot-1 right-handed hitter has mustered only 63 home runs in 815 games in professional baseball, though four of them came in his brief Major League stint. With the Angels, Marte will likely provide some corner-infield depth in Triple-A, along with Kaleb Cowart and Kyle Kubitza.
Eaves, 22, was taken in the 16th round of the 2012 Draft and batted .248/.308/.387 for Class A Advanced Inland Empire last season.
