ANAHEIM -- The Angels designated reliever Javy Guerra for assignment Thursday and will announce a corresponding move on Friday, probably to call up an additional infielder.
Guerra, 30, had a 9.00 ERA in four appearances this season for the Angels. He did not record an out in his outing during the team's 12-10 loss to St. Louis on Thursday night, walking two and allowing an earned run.
"You make your own luck," Guerra said. "I guess I've got to throw the ball better. I'll learn from it."
The Angels will possibly be looking for infield help, as they currently only have three bench players on the roster and saw third baseman Yunel Escobar (jammed right thumb) and shortstop Cliff Pennington (left hamstring cramp) each leave Thursday's game due to injury. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said both players are day to day and will continue to be evaluated.
Guerra, who was out of options, will be exposed to waivers. The right-hander has previously pitched for the Dodgers and White Sox, earning a career-high 21 saves with a 2.31 ERA as a rookie with Los Angeles in 2011.
Guerra said that despite the Angels' struggles this season, he believes they can turn things around.
"They'll figure out something for sure," he said. "There's too many good guys."
