TEMPE, Ariz. -- Michael Trout made his spring debut for the Angels on Monday, drawing a pair of walks in the Halos' 5-3 win over the Padres at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
"It was good," said Trout, who also played five innings in center field and batted third. "Finally, it's good to be out there, seeing live pitching and just being out there with your guys. It was obviously a long offseason. I come into spring ready to play."
Trout, 25, won his second American League Most Valuable Player Award last season after batting .315 with a .991 OPS, 29 home runs, 100 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 159 games for the Angels. He has said one of his goals for the 2017 season is to steal 40 bases, a threshold he has not reached since stealing 49 as a rookie in 2012.

• The Angels got their first look at right-hander JC Ramirez as a starter on Monday, when he opened the game against the Padres. Ramirez struck out two in a perfect first inning, but he then allowed a run on two hits and two walks in the second. The 28-year-old right-hander has spent the most of his career as a reliever, but the Angels are bringing him in as a starter this spring.
"I think he got a little tired," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He wasn't missing by much. First inning, he was electric. I think he has the stamina in there. We'll try to get him stretched out a little bit. But if not, that kind of arm, you could see where it could play in some different roles. He was fine. The ball was coming out hot."
• Andrelton Simmons and Danny Espinosa made their first Cactus League start together Monday as the Angels' middle infield, but it will be a while before they are back on the field together. Simmons is scheduled to depart to Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday to represent the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. Scioscia said he thinks Simmons and Espinosa will have enough time to learn to work together, though, mainly because of their big league experience.
"Those guys did a lot of work while they were here, but I think getting out here in games is what is going to give you the timing of everything you need," Scioscia said. "That's going to have to happen later in the spring. I think if you had a rookie there you might be a little more concerned, but Danny knows his way around second base and the infield, and obviously [Simmons] knows his spot.
"It's just going to be a matter of those guys getting together. I don't think there's any question that they're going to work things out and be fine."
• The Angels are now unbeaten in 14 exhibition games, dating back to last year. The Halos finished the 2016 spring by going 9-0-2 and have won their first three Cactus League games this year.
