Angels place O'Hoppe (wrist fracture) on IL, DFA Romano

KANSAS CITY -- The Angels reshaped their roster Sunday with a series of moves that included placing catcher on the 10-day injured list and designating closer for assignment.

O’Hoppe took a foul tip off his left wrist in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game against the Royals. He was attended to before returning to his catcher duties and finishing the inning. O’Hoppe came out of the game at that point and testing revealed the fracture.

“We’ll put him on the injured list and reassess him after 10 days,” Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said. “It’s a bummer. Tough news, unlucky.”

O’Hoppe threw out two baserunners on Saturday before the injury. He was hitting .205 through 26 games with one homer and eight runs batted in.

“He wasn’t hitting great, but we feel like he was getting ready to take off,” Suzuki said of O’Hoppe. “It’s always tough, but it’s part of the game and guys will have to step up.”

To help fill the void left by O’Hoppe, veteran Sebastián Rivero was summoned from Triple-A Salt Lake. The Angels also have backup catcher Travis d’Arnaud.

“We’ll play matchups, do those type of things,” Suzuki said. “They are both going to play.”

While the catching position is in flux, so is the bullpen.

Romano pitched two-thirds of an inning on Saturday and allowed three hits and four earned runs. He was 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA.

“He didn’t pitch the way he wanted to the last few times,” Suzuki said of Romano. “Tough call for us. With the arms that we need, this was the option we felt was best for us.”

The Angels restocked the pitching staff Sunday by recalling right-hander José Fermin from Salt Lake and selecting the contract of left-hander Joey Lucchesi. Additionally, the Angels designated right-hander Shaun Anderson for assignment.
