ANAHEIM -- Angels slugger Jose Pujols and manager Mike Scioscia were both ejected in the sixth inning of the Halos' 3-2 win over the Orioles Tuesday night after arguing a checked-swing call by first-base umpire Ramon De Jesus.
Pujols fell behind, 0-2, during an at-bat against right-hander Jeremy Hellickson and then tried to check his swing on a changeup, but he was rung up by De Jesus for the final out of the inning. Pujols immediately dropped his bat and threw his hands up in displeasure, drawing his first ejection of the season.
Scioscia came out to try to protect Pujols, but he was also tossed by De Jesus.
"I think it was an overreaction from Ramon," Scioscia said afterward. "It's an important guy thrown out of the game. And he certainly wasn't out on the front step yelling at him or drawing attention. He just raised his hand at the bat rack. You have to be looking for him to have seen it. It's not something you're going to notice if you're just out there looking around, doing your job."
Pujols, who went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before his premature exit, is now hitless in his last 13 at-bats. The 37-year-old veteran is batting .227 with a .646 OPS, 17 home runs and 68 RBIs in 104 games this season.
