Jackson wraps up incredible season for Orem
Here’s a look at the top performances of the past week by Angels prospects in the Minor Leagues:
Saturday, Sept. 7: Jackson collects RBI double for Orem
No. 5 prospect Jeremiah Jackson went 1-for-4 with an RBI double on Saturday for the Rookie Advanced Orem Owlz, who closed out their 2019 regular season with a 4-2 win. Jackson, a second-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, finished his second pro season hitting .266 with 23 home runs and a .938 OPS over just 65 games in the Pioneer League. Jackson’s bat speed impresses and his strength at the plate has developed quickly, jumping from just seven home runs over 48 games in his pro debut in 2018. Friday, Sept. 6: Orem powered by Knowles
D’Shawn Knowles, the Angels’ No. 8 prospect, hit his sixth homer of the season and second in as many games for the Orem Owlz, the Angels’ Rookie Advanced affiliate playing in the short-season Pioneer League. The 18-year-old signed with the Angels in July of 2017 and was promoted to Orem last season, batting .321 with four homers in 28 games. This season, he played all 62 of his games with the Owlz, but struggled to a .241 average with 73 strikeouts. But he is still only 18 years old and has lots of growth ahead of him as he moves up the ranks in the Angels’ system. Friday's prospect stats »
Thursday, Sept. 5: Deveaux belts seventh home run
Trent Deveaux launched his seventh home run of the season on Thursday, his first since being promoted to the Pioneer League from the Arizona League in late August. The Orem outfielder hit .247 with a .769 OPS over 52 games for the Arizona League Angels before he was promoted. The Angels’ No. 11 prospect is still raw at the plate as a 19-year-old, but his 80-grade speed should really shine if he can reach base more as he develops. Wednesday, Sept. 4: Knowles belts fifth homer
D’Shawn Knowles went 1-for-5 with his fifth home run of the season on Wednesday night for the Rookie Advanced Orem Owlz, who still have a few games remaining in their regular season. Knowles is now hitting .241 on the season, down from .311 in 2018, which he split between the Arizona League and Pioneer League. The Angels’ No. 8 prospect still brings plenty to the table, though, with a strong approach from both sides of the plate and the potential to grow into some power over the coming years. Monday, Sept. 2: Adams homers in final 2019 at-bat
In his final at-bat of the season, Jordyn Adams went deep. The Angels’ No. 3 prospect hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to cap a 3-for-4 performance in Class A Advanced Inland Empire’s loss to Rancho Cucamonga. Adams’ three knocks accounted for half of the 66ers’ hits in the contest and were his most in nine games since his promotion to the California League. The Angels gave Adams, their 2018 first-round pick, an aggressive assignment to Class A Burlington to open his first full season, and the 19-year-old outfielder, rather unsurprisingly, struggled out of the gate, hitting .162/.294/.222 with four extra-base hits over his first 27 contests. But as the weather in the Midwest League began to heat up, so did Adams’ bat, and he slashed .292/.374/.402 with 19 extra-base hit (5 HR) and 12 steals over his final 72 games before moving up to Inland Empire. Sunday, Sept. 1: Adell records another multihit game
Top prospect Jo Adell (No. 4 in MLB) went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI as he recorded multiple hits for the fourth time in his past six contests for Triple-A Salt Lake. In doing so, the 20-year-old outfielder improved his Triple-A average to .269 in 26 games, and he’s now driven in seven runs for the Bees in 26 games. Knee and ankle injuries cost Adell the first two months of the season, but he’s been healthy and performed as expected since returning, hitting .290 with 10 homers and 27 doubles in 75 games across three levels.
