ANAHEIM -- Third baseman Yunel Escobar departed the Angels' 11-10 loss to the A's on Sunday afternoon in the seventh inning with an intercostal strain and is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Monday.
"We're concerned," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He came in after the top of the seventh and just felt his side stiffen up again. We'll see how it sets up and see how it looks tomorrow."
The injury caused Escobar to miss two games last week, but he returned to the lineup Friday and started all three matchups against the A's this weekend. On Sunday, he launched a leadoff home run off left-hander Sean Manaea to give the Angels a quick lead in the first inning.
Escobar grounded out in his next two at-bats and then was replaced by pinch-hitter Kaleb Cowart in the bottom of the seventh.
Escobar has been one of the Angels' more consistent batters this season and is hitting .274 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs in 89 games. The 34-year-old veteran missed 16 games with a left hamstring strain earlier this season.
