Report: Rendon, Nats renew extension talks

July 7th, 2019

The Nationals and star third baseman have renewed talks on a potential contract extension, according to a MASN report. The sides have had on-and-off negotiations since Spring Training, but no deal has come to fruition. Rendon is due to be a free agent following this season.

According to the MASN report, Rendon's agent, Scott Boras, was seen coming out of an elevator at Nationals Park with principal owner Ted Lerner and other members of the Lerner family after Washington's 6-0 victory over the Royals.

The club has not confirmed the report.

Rendon has enjoyed the best first half of a season in his career, slashing .304/.388/.612 with 20 home runs. He was selected as an All-Star for the first time in his career, though he said he will not be traveling to Cleveland for Tuesday's All-Star Game so he can rest his ailing left hamstring and quadriceps.

Rendon has spent all seven of his Major League seasons with the Nationals, and over the past few years has become one of the game's best hitters. Since 2017, he's hitting .305/.389/.551 with 69 homers in 356 games.
