Posey sits out, Giants call up Garcia

Coonrod optioned; Gott return imminent; Bochy approaches milestone

June 2nd, 2019

BALTIMORE -- With nursing a sore right hamstring, the Giants recalled Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Sacramento to provide extra catching help for Sunday’s series finale against the Orioles.

Posey departed Saturday’s 8-2 win in the seventh inning after tweaking his hamstring while attempting to run out a grounder. The Giants aren’t overly concerned about the malady, but manager Bruce Bochy said they wanted to have another catcher available to back up , who started behind the plate Sunday in place of Posey.

“It's hard to go into a game with one catcher,” Bochy said. “Could Buster go back there? Probably, but I think we'd put him at risk to make it worse. Pablo [Sandoval], could he catch? Yes, but with where we're at and the day off tomorrow, I think we're OK on the pitching side. This makes sense right now for a day to see how Buster's doing. It gives us some time. After the day off in New York, we'll see if he's available to go.”

Right-hander was optioned to clear a roster spot for Garcia, who went 1-for-6 over three games in a brief stint with the Giants earlier this month.

Gott on track to return

The Giants are expecting to activate right-hander off the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Mets. Gott, 26, posted a 3.00 ERA over 24 innings in 21 appearances this season before landing on the IL with a right forearm strain on May 25.

Bochy closing in on milestone win

Bochy entered Sunday sitting on 998 career victories with the Giants, leaving him two shy of the 1,000-win mark. He is poised to join Hall of Famer John McGraw as the only two managers in franchise history to reach that threshold. McGraw won 2,583 games with the New York Giants from 1902-1932.
