CINCINNATI -- The Reds added an infielder/outfielder to their 40-man roster on Thursday, when Arismendy Alcantara was claimed off of waivers from the A's. To make room, the well-traveled Patrick Kivlehan was designated for assignment.
Alcantara, 24, batted .278/.325/.467 with 12 home runs, 56 RBIs and 32 stolen bases in 108 Minor League games -- mostly at the Triple-A level -- in 2016. He began the season in the Cubs' organization and was traded by Oakland for Chris Coghlan on June 9.
In 16 games over four big league stints with the A's this season, Alcantara batted .211 (4-for-19). He also spent parts of the 2014-15 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Cubs.
Kivlehan was claimed off waivers from the Padres on Sept. 28 and made his Reds debut on Friday. He was 0-for-5 in three games, including one start in right field.
It marks the latest transaction for Kivlehan, who has been on the move often this year.
"I got put on the roster by the Mariners in November last year, and then traded to the Rangers, like, a week later, and then designated by them in May, traded back to Seattle, designated by them Aug. 1, claimed by the Padres. I was in Triple-A for a while, went up for a week, came back down, finished the year there, designated there and now here we are," Kivlehan said after he arrived in Cincinnati. "So yeah, it's been a crazy 2016."
