Wednesday's top 10 Arizona Fall League performers

October 24th, 2019

Here are the top 10 performers from Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the Arizona Fall League.

Jo Adell, OF, Angels No. 1
Adell set the tone for the Mesa lineup during its victory Wednesday, opening the game with a rocket double to left-center field before coming around to score on a wild pitch. The Angels’ No. 1 prospect finished with a three-hit evening, notching singles in the fifth and seventh to raise his fall average to .280. Two of those hits came against southpaws, as the 20-year-old collected his eighth hit in 18 at-bats against left-handers during the Fall League.

Cody Ponce, RHP, Pirates
Ponce threw five innings of one-run ball in his final start of the AFL season. Ponce, who threw 56 of his 78 pitches for strikes, didn’t issue a walk and struck out eight, the most of any of his five starts in Arizona. The right-hander pitched around baserunners in four of his five innings, but was able to generate strikeouts when necessary to escape trouble. Ponce struck out the side in the fourth and fanned five of the final nine batters he faced.

Anthony Castro, RHP, Tigers No. 20
Castro delivered a dominant start Wednesday against Surprise, yielding just one hit across four frames, while adding four strikeouts for good measure. After back-to-back starts in which he allowed three runs, the 24-year-old utilized his offspeed stuff well, retiring the final seven batters that he faced. Detroit’s No. 20 prospect has compiled a 4.58 ERA across six Fall League starts.

Jarren Duran, OF, Red Sox No. 4
Duran did a bit of everything for Peoria in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate. The speedy outfielder picked up his eighth RBI of the AFL via an eighth-inning double and reached twice more on a pair of walks. Duran, who also picked up his fifth stolen base in the game, scored after each of his walks.

Connor Capel, OF, Cardinals No. 24
Capel continued his late-season surge in the AFL by going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs for Glendale. Capel connected on a two-run shot to right field with two outs in the fifth inning, then added an RBI ground-rule double down the line in left two frames later. The 22-year-old outfielder is batting .409 and has hit all three of his home runs during his six-game hit streak, which has his season average up to .263.

Jeremy Pena, SS, Astros No. 8
Pena, hitting atop the Peoria lineup, went hitless in each of his first two at-bats, but ended the game on a high note and he doubled in the fourth to drive in a run and singled in the sixth to bring home another. Pena also scored a run as a part of one of his more productive days at the plate this fall, as he's now batting only .200 for the season.

Seth Beer, 1B/OF, D-backs No. 4
A trio of D-backs prospects paced Salt River’s offense on Wednesday, as Beer**, Geraldo Perdomo** and Jake McCarthy combined to go 5-for-12 with three RBIs. Beer, Arizona’s No. 4 prospect, hit a two-run triple (104 mph exit velocity) off the center fielder’s glove in the fifth inning and later added a single to finish 2-for-4. He was also hit by a pitch and picked up his first Fall League stolen base in the multihit performance, which pushed his average above the .300 mark (.304).

Victor Castaneda, RHP, Brewers
Castaneda struck out the side in the fourth inning to finish with a season-high seven strikeouts in his final start for Glendale. The 21-year-old right-hander threw 43 of 70 pitches for strikes in the outing, allowing one run on two hits and three walks. After garnering AFL Pitcher of the Week honors during the league’s opening week, Castaneda went on to post a 1.99 ERA with 29 strikeouts and five walks in 22 2/3 innings while making six appearances (five starts). He limited the opposition to just 13 hits and a .165 average.

Tyler Stephenson, C, Reds No. 7; Stuart Fairchild, OF, Reds No. 16
Stephenson and Fairchild's combined 5-for-9 performance helped power Glendale over Salt River, 6-5, on Wednesday. Stephenson, the Reds’ No. 7 prospect, finished 2-for-5 after he put the Desert Dogs on the board in the first inning with an RBI double. The hit, Stephenson’s seventh AFL two-bagger, had an exit velocity of 100.6 mph, and he also posted exit velocities of 103.1 mph (groundout), 101 mph (groundout ) and 97.1 mph (single) on the three other balls he put in play. Fairchild went 3-for-4 with an RBI and paced Glendale’s offense with two runs scored. He also reached via a walk and swiped a bag. The 23-year-old outfielder is batting .387 through eight games and has now hit safely in seven straight. More »
