NEW YORK -- A's third baseman Danny Valencia, who suffered a left hamstring strain during Wednesday's game in New York, will go on the disabled list Friday ahead of the team's series opener in Toronto.
Manager Bob Melvin made the announcement after Thursday's 7-3 win over the Yankees and noted a corresponding roster move will be announced when the transaction is made official Friday.
Utility player Tyler Ladendorf is largely expected to get the call from Triple-A Nashville in place of Valencia, who will return home Friday for an MRI, while Chris Coghlan will likely continue to see the majority of time at third base for the A's. Coghlan hit a two-run homer as part of the A's four-homer effort Thursday.
"Hamstrings are a tough deal," Melvin said. "They're not a day or two and you're back in the lineup, for the most part."
Ladendorf, who can play nearly all infield and outfield positions, is batting .240/.269/.360 with one home run and two RBIs in 12 games for Nashville. He was not in the Sounds' lineup on Thursday night.

Worth noting
• Right-hander Henderson Alvarez, who allowed one run in three innings for Class A Advanced Stockton on Thursday in his first rehab start, is scheduled to make his second on Monday with Nashville. Alvarez is expected to total three innings, or 45 pitches.
• The Yankees held a pregame ceremony in honor of former A's Minor Leaguer Michael Nolan, who was killed in Yonkers, N.Y., last year. Melvin presented Nolan's family with Michael's No. 47 A's jersey.
