A's pick Deichmann at No. 43 to close Day 1

June 12th, 2017

OAKLAND -- The A's added a power-hitting outfielder with their final Draft pick on Day 1, choosing Greg Deichmann with the No. 43 overall selection in the second round.
Deichmann recently helped the LSU Tigers clinch a College World Series berth with a remarkable junior season that saw him hit .320 and lead the team with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs. He also led the state of Louisiana in home runs for three straight years at Brother Martin High School.

He joins No. 6 selection Austin Beck and No. 33 pick Kevin Merrell in Oakland's haul on the first day.
A's sixth overall pick: Austin Beck
A's 33rd overall: Kevin Merrell
The 2017 season was Deichmann's first year as a full-time right fielder, after he spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career bouncing between corner-infield positions. A's scouting director Eric Kubota believes Deichmann has "the athletic ability to play the corner of the outfield."
Deichmann, selected in the 26th round by the Twins last year, returned for his junior season with improved plate discipline to accompany his power, drawing 47 walks after tallying just 19 in 2016.

The Draft continues on Tuesday with Rounds 3-10. The MLB.com preview show begins at 9:30 a.m. PT, with exclusive coverage beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
