OAKLAND -- A's third baseman Ryon Healy capped an impressive first season in the big leagues with American League Rookie of the Month honors for September.
The nod was much deserved, after Healy hit .355 (38-for-107) with a .389 on-base percentage in the month, totaling seven home runs and 19 RBIs for an A's club that brought him up after the All-Star break.
Since his callup, Healy has exceeded expectations, finishing his rookie season with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs in just 72 games, batting .305/.337/.524 in that span.
Monday morning, A's manager Bob Melvin deemed Healy, who began the season at the Double-A level, as their projected everyday third baseman going into next season.
"We feel really comfortable with him at third right now," Melvin said, "and going into next year you would have to consider him the incumbent, and he's proved it based on performance."
Healy is the first Oakland player to take home AL rookie honors since Nate Freiman in May 2013.
