Astros announce May Minor League Players of the Month

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros player development department has named OF Derek Fisher the Astros May Minor League Player of the Month and RHP Hector Perez the Astros May Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

Fisher, 23, has been having one of the best seasons in all of minor league baseball in 2017. The Astros No. 5 prospect per MLB.com, Fisher batted .369 (41x111) with nine doubles, eight homers, 24 RBI, six steals and a 1.088 OPS (.421 OBP/.667 SLG) in 27 games for the Triple A Fresno Grizzlies during May. Yesterday, Fisher was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week after hitting .435 (10x23) with three homers and nine RBI over a six-game span. From May 27-June 1, Fisher hit a home run in four straight games.

Fisher currently leads the PCL in total bases (132), while ranking third in OPS (1.002) and slugging (.603), fourth in hits (74), tied for fourth in homers (14) and eighth in OBP (.399). He was originally selected by the Astros with the 37th overall pick in the 2014 draft.

Perez, who turns 21 years old today, had a stellar May with the Buies Creek Astros as one of the youngest pitchers in the Class A Advanced Carolina League. In five May starts, Perez went 3-2 with a 2.96 ERA (8ER/24.1IP), 32 strikeouts, eight walks and a .207 opponent batting average.

In 11 combined games between Buies Creek (7g) and Class A Quad Cities (4g) this season, Perez has struck out 68 batters and allowed just 31 hits (.177 opponent average) in 49.1 innings pitched. Among all minor league pitchers this season, he owns the 10th-best strikeouts per 9.0 innings ratio (12.41). Perez was originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic on July 7, 2014.
