The White Sox have earned the official designation this season of Pope Leo XIV’s favorite team, from receiving his own White Sox “Pope Hat” recently to confirming he attended the 2005 World Series.
At least one Astros fan was feeling a bit left out, though. The Houston broadcast spotlighted a fan during Thursday’s game -- against the White Sox -- who donned an Astros-themed “Pope Hat.”
It’s worth noting, too, that the White Sox squared off with the Astros when they won the 2005 Fall Classic. Current Houston color commentator Geoff Blum was actually part of the championship Chicago squad that year, and play-by-play voice Todd Kalas had fun with the moment.
“Is it pretty cool that the Pope knows you?” Kalas said.
“You guys haven’t hung out?”
“No, not yet,” Blum replied. “That is on my bucket list. Truly.”
