Astros set roster; De Jong in, McCormick out

October 11th, 2020

With the possibility of playing seven games in seven days, the Astros added right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong to their roster for the American League Championship Series against the Rays. Houston dropped outfielder Chas McCormick, so it will carry 14 pitchers and 14 position players.

De Jong, 26, appeared in only three games for the Astros after the club selected his contract from the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Aug. 6. De Jong threw two-thirds of an inning in relief on Aug. 25 against the Angels in Anaheim and gave up two runs. The righty allowed four earned runs in three innings in a start on Sept. 8 against the A’s and started the final game of the regular season, Sept. 27 at Texas. De Jong gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings in that game and struck out six batters.

The Astros added De Jong because he can give them some length in relief. Plus, he throws strikes and has a slider that he uses against both right- and left-handers.

"We felt De Jong could give us more length than probably [lefty Cionel] Pérez and he had shown more control of the strike zone," manager Dusty Baker said. "I love the stuff Pérez has, but some of the guys upstairs explained [that] the righties that we have, if we pitch them properly, they can get the lefties out."

McCormick was on the roster for the AL Wild Card Series and the AL Division Series, but he didn’t appear in a game and has yet to make his Major League debut.
