BALTIMORE -- Yankees catcher Austin Romine left Saturday's 8-6 win over the Orioles after injuring his left hand before the start of the bottom of the ninth inning.
With closer Aroldis Chapman warming up, a slider in the dirt hit the top of Romine's thumbnail, bruising his thumb and forcing him out of the game.
"It's weird, I didn't understand it," said Romine. "I was like, 'How did I get hit in the thumb?' I looked down and my glove was hanging off. Just a freak accident. It's weird."
"I don't know if I've ever seen that," said manager Joe Girardi, a former catcher.
X-rays were negative and Romine was confident that he could play in Sunday's series finale if needed. Girardi wasn't as convinced, suggesting Romine may feel sore in the morning.

"I've been hit in the thumb before. I'm a catcher, I get beat up," Romine said. "I was just a little upset that I let that happen. It was stinging pretty good, and when I looked down I saw the glove filling up with blood, so I didn't really have a choice when the manager says, 'You're done,' so I walked off."
Romine was starting his third straight game with Brian McCann recovering from a hyperextended left elbow suffered Wednesday in Toronto. McCann was available for emergency situations, and when one arose in the ninth inning, the 32-year-old entered the game for the final three outs.
"Who else am I going to put in?" Girardi said. "[First-base coach] Tony [Pena] turned 59 today, so he's getting pretty up there."

McCann confirmed after the game that he felt fine and that's he's ready to return to the starting lineup Sunday, if needed. McCann participated fully in batting practice Saturday after hitting at 50 percent off a tee Friday.
Regardless of who starts Sunday, Romine and McCann could both be available.
"Thank God it wasn't a fastball, in all honesty," Romine said of the Chapman pitch that caught his thumb. "It could have done some damage. I dodged a bullet there."
