Orioles Stat of the Day: Sept./Oct. 2021

October 3rd, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Orioles this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

Oct. 3: Blue Jays 12, Orioles 4 -- Nevin blasts off
The Orioles' season finale featured the first career home run by Tyler Nevin, a Statcast-projected 442-foot shot off Hyun Jin Ryu in the third inning that landed in the upper deck at Rogers Centre. Per Statcast, it was the longest first career home run by an Oriole since the system began tracking in 2015. It was tied for the seventh-longest first career homer in the Majors in that time.

Oct. 2: Blue Jays 10, Orioles 1 -- Solid season for O's ace
John Means finished his 2021 season on a sour note, tying a career high by allowing seven runs (six earned) in three innings. It did not spoil what was, on the whole, another fine season for the Orioles' left-hander. The most impressive of Means' final statistics might be his 1.03 WHIP, good for the third lowest by an Orioles starter (minimum 140 innings) in team history. It is the lowest since Mike Cuellar's 1.005 WHIP in 1969. Dave McNally holds the team record, with a 0.842 WHIP in '68.

Oct. 1: Blue Jays 6, Orioles 4 -- Hays' ninth outfield assist
Austin Hays provided the night's defensive highlight by throwing out Cavan Biggio at home in the fifth, turning what appeared to be a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sac fly into a 9-2 double play. The assist was Hays' team-high ninth of the season, putting him in sole possession of seventh among AL outfielders.

Sept. 30: Orioles 6, Red Sox 2: Mountcastle's historic rookie year
Ryan Mountcastle's rookie campaign continues to be a historic one. On Thursday, he smacked his 33rd home run of the season, giving the Orioles their first lead of the game. The 416-foot bomb tied him for the ninth-most homers by an American League rookie in a single season -- also Jose Canseco (1986) and Jimmie Hall (1963).

Sept. 29: Red Sox 6, Orioles 0 -- Walkless start for Lowther
The Orioles lost despite five solid innings from Zac Lowther in the rookie left-hander's final start of the season. It was Lowther's sixth career start and first without a walk; he also did not issue any free passes in his first two relief appearances earlier this year. That's notable going forward for a pitcher who relies on command rather than pure stuff to be effective, and who figures to battle for a rotation job next spring.

Sept. 28: Orioles 4, Red Sox 2 -- O's finally beat Sale
The Orioles played spoiler in the AL Wild Card race in the opener, beating Chris Sale and the Red Sox, 4-2, at Oriole Park. It marked the first time they've beaten Sale since Aug. 18, 2014, when Sale was a member of the White Sox. Since joining the Red Sox in 2017, he had previously been 8-0 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 starts vs. Baltimore.

Sept. 26: Rangers 7, Orioles 4 -- Means closing in
John Means pitched better than his line showed Sunday, taking a hard-luck loss in the series finale. The three runs Means was charged with in five innings raised his ERA to 3.32 from 3.25; he'll get one more start to shave that to what could be a historic number. Since 2000, Means' ERA is already the third lowest by an Orioles starter with a minimum of 130 innings. It trails only Erik Bedard's 3.16 in '07 and Miguel González's 3.23 in '14.

Sept. 25: Orioles 3, Rangers 2 -- Hays stays hot
September is nearly over, and Austin Hays remains locked in. Doubling in the eighth inning of Saturday's win, Hays extended his current hitting streak to 11 straight games. The left fielder has hit safely in 21 of 23 games this month and reached base safely in 22 of 23. He's raised his OPS from .721 to .777 -- 56 points -- in the process.

Sept. 24: Rangers 8, Orioles 5 -- Mullins goes 30-30
Cedric Mullins became the first player in Orioles history to complete a 30-30 season, connecting for his 30th home run on Friday. Mullins also owns 30 steals this season; he is the 43rd player in MLB history to go 30-30 and first since Christian Yelich and Ronald Acuña Jr. in 2019. He is also the first player in franchise history to do it in nearly a century, since Ken Williams for the St. Louis Browns in 1922.

Sept. 23: Orioles 3, Rangers 0 -- Clamping down at home
The Orioles notched their second shutout of the week. The distinction with this one is it came at home, which has been a rare feat during the club's current rebuild. It marked the Orioles’ first home shutout in more than two years, since July 21, 2019, when Asher Wojciechowski, Paul Fry and Mychal Givens combined on a one-hitter against Boston.

Sept. 22: Phillies 4, Orioles 3 -- Mullins doing it all
Cedric Mullins lofted a two-out third-inning triple into the right-field corner off Zack Wheeler, the fifth three-bagger of what's been a sensational season for Mullins. With 10 games to play, he has 36 doubles, five triples, 29 home runs and 30 stolen bases on the season. He is the 13th player in MLB history to reach each of those totals in a single season -- and the first to do so since Mookie Betts in 2018.

Sept. 21: Phillies 3, Orioles 2 (10 innings) -- 15th starter
The Orioles used eight pitchers in what was a herculean bullpen effort. The first was opener Conner Greene, who became the 15th different starting pitcher used by the Orioles this season. It was also Greene's first career start; he struck out two over a scoreless inning before giving way to Marcos Diplán, Thomas Eshelman and eventually five others. The Orioles franchise record for starters used in a season is 19, from 1955.

Sept. 20: Orioles 2, Phillies 0 -- That's a Means swing
There are American League pitchers who love getting the rare chance to swing the bat in Interleague contests. John Means is one of those pitchers. The Orioles' lefty made the most of his opportunity, doubling to center off Sam Coonrod in the seventh for his first career extra-base hit. It was also the first extra-base hit by an Orioles pitcher in more than a decade, since Zack Britton's home run on July 3, 2011.

Sept. 19: Red Sox 8, Orioles 6 -- Mancini ties team lead
As he continues to work his way back from an oblique injury, Trey Mancini returned to the lineup in a big way. With the Orioles down two in the seventh, Mancini cleared the bases with a double to give Baltimore its first lead of the game. The hit marked Mancini's fifth tying or go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning or later this season, tied for the most on the team. Sunday was Mancini's first multi-RBI game since July 11 against the White Sox, when he drove in two runs.

Sept. 18: Red Sox 9, Orioles 3 -- Mountcastle making ROY push
Ryan Mountcastle got Baltimore on the board with a two-run homer in the first that made him the first rookie in Orioles history to reach the 30-homer mark. Mountcastle is tied with the Rangers' Adolis García for the most home runs by a rookie in the Majors, and he is just the sixth American League rookie since 2000 with 30-plus homers in a season. Mountcastle has homered five times in his last 10 games, and he has hit a team-leading 16 homers since the All-Star break.

Sept. 17: Red Sox 7, Orioles 1 -- Mullins leads Majors
With his leadoff single against Boston ace Chris Sale in the series opener, Cedric Mullins is batting .364 (47-for-129) in the first inning this season. Mullins' 47 hits are the most in the Majors for a single inning.

Sept. 16: Orioles 3, Yankees 2 (10 innings) -- Turning the table
Storming back in the late innings on Thursday, the Orioles finished their season series against the Yankees on a high note -- and with an 8-11 record against them. It’s the first time the O’s have defeated New York more than seven times in a season since 2016. Two years ago, Baltimore went 2-17 against the Yanks.

Sept. 15: Yankees 4, Orioles 3 -- Hays surging in September
Providing all of the Orioles' offense, Austin Hays enjoyed his fourth career multi-homer game and his third of 2021. It continued what's been a rewarding September for Hays, who is now healthy and hitting .302 (16-for-53) with six homers this month. Hays has 14 career homers in September -- and 15 total in all other months combined.

Sept. 14: Yankees 7, Orioles 2 -- Another milestone for Mounty
Ryan Mountcastle's fifth-inning RBI double didn't help him crack the club rookie home run record he's seeking, but it did place him in rarified company in another category. The RBI was his 80th of the season, making Mountcastle the fifth rookie to reach that total in club history. The others are Ron Hansen (86 in 1960), Eddie Murray (88 in ‘77), Cal Ripken Jr. (93 in ‘82), and Jim Gentile (98 in ‘60).

Sept. 12: Blue Jays, 22 Orioles, 7 -- Outscored
Dropping three of four games to the Blue Jays, the Orioles allowed 47 runs over the weekend set after losing Sunday's finale. The 47 runs allowed were one shy of the club record for a four-game series, set from Aug. 9-12, 1993, against the Tigers. Baltimore also set a new franchise record by using its 59th player of the season when it called on right-hander Eric Hanhold in relief. The previous record of 58 was set in 2019.

Sept. 11: Blue Jays 11, Orioles 10 (G1) and Blue Jays 11, Orioles 2 (G2) -- Mountcastle eyes Cal
Rookie Ryan Mountcastle had just watched Austin Hays smack his second home run of Game 1. Mountcastle high-fived his teammate, then smacked his own homer. It was Mountcastle's 27th of the year, tying him with Eddie Murray (1977) for the second-most rookie home runs in club history. Mountcastle is one shy of Cal Ripken Jr.'s franchise record, set in 1982.

Sept. 10: Orioles 6, Blue Jays 3 -- Mullins' eighth leadoff homer
Cedric Mullins started off Friday's series opener in a big way. He smacked his eighth leadoff home run and 28th overall this season. He now has the second-most leadoff home runs in franchise history behind Brady Anderson's 12 in 1996.

Sept. 9: Royals 6, Orioles 0 -- Offense slowed in finale
Despite some hard-hit balls and good opportunities for Cedric Mullins and Jorge Mateo, the O's were shut out by the Royals for the first time since May 17, 2014. The teams split the four-game set, snapping Baltimore's streak of five straight series wins against Kansas City at Camden Yards dating to 2015.

Sept. 8: Orioles 9, Royals 8 -- Barreda gets MLB moment
Since being selected in the 2007 Draft, Manny Barreda has waited for his call to the big leagues. He finally had his moment. At 32 years and 335 days old, he is the fourth-oldest Oriole to make his MLB debut in club history (since 1954). He is the third O's pitcher over 30 years old to make his MLB debut this season -- joining Mickey Jannis (33 years, 189 days) and Dusten Knight (30 years, 331 days).

Sept. 7: Orioles 7, Royals 3 -- Mullins' homer streak
Cedric Mullins clubbed his 27th home run in the seventh inning, the first time in the All-Star center fielder's career that he has homered in three consecutive games. But it's the third time this season that he's homered three times in a stretch of three or fewer games. He hit three jacks in a two-game stretch on June 5-6, then hit two each in games on June 18 and 19.

Sept. 6: Royals 3, Orioles 2 -- Mullins mashing lefties in '21
With a double and a home run on Monday, Cedric Mullins now has 20 of his 59 extra-base hits off left-handed pitching this season. Mullins has been batting exclusively from the left side in 2021 after giving up switch-hitting prior to the season.

Sept. 5: Orioles 8, Yankees 7 -- Hays' hit streak at 12 games
Austin Hays has hit safely in a career-best 12 straight games, batting .386/.413/.659 (17-for-44) with four doubles, one triple, two homers and eight RBIs over that span. He hit his 15th home run of the year off Corey Kluber in the second inning on Sunday.

Sept. 4: Orioles 4, Yankees 3 -- Hays 'hits' career best
With a 2-for-5 showing (both singles) on Saturday, Austin Hays extended his hit streak to a career-best 11 consecutive games. Over that span, he is batting .385/.415/.615 with seven runs, four doubles, one triple, one homer and seven RBIs for the Orioles.

Sept. 3: Yankees 4, Orioles 3 (11 innings) -- Rare free ball for Baltimore
The Orioles don't play many extra-inning games -- their 11-inning game with the Yankees on Friday was only their ninth of the season, and their first 11-inning game since April 7 (also in the Bronx). All told, Baltimore is 3-8 in extra-inning games this season.

Sept. 1: Blue Jays 5, Orioles 4 -- Hays continues streak
In the top of the fifth inning of Wednesday's rubber match, Austin Hays smacked a ground ball for a single, extending his hitting streak to nine games and tying his second-longest streak. Hays is one game away from tying the longest streak of his career -- a 10-game stretch that ran from Aug. 1-12.
