The best baseball players born on Feb. 23

February 23rd, 2023

Who are the best players born on each day of the year? We have a list for every day on the calendar.

Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for Feb. 23.

1) Ray Brown (1908)
A two-way star, Brown was one of the brightest stars of the Negro Leagues from 1931-45. Over his 14-year career, Brown tossed 1,477 innings with an ERA of 3.02 and held his own at the plate with a .269 average and a .753 OPS in just under 1,400 plate appearances. Elected to Cooperstown in 2006, Brown is the lone Hall of Famer born on Feb. 23.

2) Ron Hunt (1941)
Hunt had a solid career that lasted just over a decade. Over 12 seasons, Hunt hit .273 and was named an All-Star twice. In 1963, he came in second in National League Rookie of the Year voting with Pete Rose taking home the honor. Hunt had a pretty painful career as well, leading the league in hit-by-pitches in six consecutive seasons from 1968-73.

3) (1963)
These days, Bonilla is known more for his paychecks than his career on the diamond, but at one point, he was one of the best hitters in MLB. Bonilla made six All-Star teams and won three Silver Slugger awards over his 16 years in the big leagues. He finished his career with 287 home runs, 2,010 hits and a World Series ring from 1997.

4) (1929)
Howard took over at catcher for Hall of Famer Yogi Berra in the twilight of his Yankees career, but Howard was no slouch himself. He won the American League MVP award in 1963, becoming one of only 11 backstops to take home the award. Howard was a 12-time All-Star and won two Gold Glove awards and four World Series titles.

5) (1972)
White enjoyed a 15-year big league career, spending eight of those with the Montreal Expos. While he managed to slug nearly 200 homers, keep an average of .284 and play terrific outfield defense, White was an All-Star only once, in 2003.
