SEATTLE -- The Blue Jays still don't know the severity of Devon Travis' injury after the second baseman was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a bone bruise in his right knee.
Travis was to see a specialist in New York this week, but manager John Gibbons wasn't privy to how it went, or if the appointment even took place. But Gibbons did know one thing: He isn't optimistic.
"I wouldn't expect him back anytime soon regardless," Gibbons said.
The bad news broke as Travis was settling in as the Blue Jays' everyday second baseman in his third year in the Major Leagues. After a stormy April, when Travis hit .130/.193/.195, he was on a torrid pace in May, slashing .364/.373/.646 with 20 extra-base hits.
Gibbons' pessimism may stem from Travis' extensive injury history in his short career. Travis sustained a similar injury last season during the American League Championship Series, which later required surgery. His rookie season in 2015 was cut short due to left-shoulder surgery.
Pearce starts rehab assignment
Blue Jays left fielder Steve Pearce began a rehab assignment on Thursday with Double-A New Hampshire, going 0-for-3 with a walk while hitting third and playing left field. The veteran outfielder is on the 10-day disabled list with a right calf strain.
Pearce was in the Fishercats' lineup again on Friday, batting leadoff and playing left field. His return may be on the horizon.
"If all goes well, I would hope so," Gibbons said. "The point was to get him to where he could start playing and his calf didn't bother him anymore. We're going to ease him into it, but once he proves that hey, no after effects, he's feeling fine.
"I say that, too, because we need him. If we didn't need him, I think we'd be a little more conservative. But we do."
Pearce was hitting .205 with four home runs before landing on the DL on May 15.

Right-handed pitcher Mike Bolsinger cleared waivers and accepted an assignment in Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. He was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on June 1 after going 0-2 with a 5.61 in five starts.
