Thumb injury caps eventful day for Donaldson

Third baseman day to day, laughs off verbal incident with manager Gibbons

NEW YORK -- is considered day to day after he was removed during the sixth inning of Wednesday's 7-4 victory over the Yankees because of a jammed right thumb. Donaldson's departure was unrelated to a verbal altercation that he appeared to have with manager John Gibbons earlier in the game.
Donaldson struck out in the top of the third inning, and after returning to the dugout, he slammed his bat in frustration. Gibbons then approached Donaldson and the two exchanged words, at one point going face to face during the apparent disagreement. Shortstop and backup catcher separated the two, and the situation never got physical.
After the game, both Donaldson and his manager had a lot of fun with the media about what their discussion was about. Regardless of the specifics, it's pretty evident that there's no hard feelings between the pair and that cooler heads have prevailed.
"I was coming back to the dugout and hit my bat against the thing," Donaldson said. "Gibby asked me what kind of cologne I was wearing. I said, 'It's this new cologne called Tom Ford, I just got it.' He got pretty close to me and got a good whiff of it, and I was like, 'Hey man, back up.' I was like, 'I'll give you some after the game.'"
What about Tulowitzki stepping in between the two?
"I think he liked [the cologne] too," Donaldson said.
Gibbons' version of events was different, but also filled with plenty of humor.
"I told him after the first at-bat, 'Get a new bat, that one ain't working,'" Gibbons said. "He took the same one up there the second time, that didn't work. He chose to break it, so I went down and told him, 'You should have listened to me.'"

As for the thumb, Donaldson missed one game earlier this season because of the same issue, but he aggravated the area after grounding out in the sixth inning. He was removed from the game for precautionary reasons, but he remains optimistic about the possibility of playing Friday in Cleveland.
"Just jammed my thumb pretty good," Donaldson said. "It's obviously not the first time it has happened this year, but it got me pretty good so I didn't want to do any further damage -- going back out there again and possibly getting jammed a second or third time and having to maybe miss more time than I need to."
