BALTIMORE -- The Blue Jays hope to have first baseman Justin Smoak back in the lineup Friday night as he remains day to day with a sore right calf muscle.
Smoak sustained the injury during a game against Boston on Tuesday night but it's not considered serious. Toronto initially hoped to have him back for the series opener in Baltimore on Thursday night but instead the club will wait another day.
Prior to this week, Smoak had missed just one game during the regular season. He is currently four home runs shy of 40 and 16 RBIs short of 100, which would mark another impressive milestone in his breakout season.
"He's a little better, but he's going to need another day," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Thursday afternoon. "Hopefully he'll be good to go tomorrow."

Sanchez to throw off a mound
The Blue Jays have yet to close the door on a possible return to the active roster for right-hander Aaron Sanchez. The 25-year-old has been limited to eight starts this season because of a blister on his right middle finger and hasn't pitched since July 19.
Sanchez has been playing catch in recent weeks, but he'll take it one step further this weekend in Baltimore by throwing off a mound. Sanchez is not expected to return this season as a starter, but he could return out of the bullpen and building up for a short stint also is a way to avoid a rehab assignment.
With Minor League schedules set to end this weekend, Sanchez does not have any viable options remaining to get stretched out to start.
"He's going to get on a mound in the next couple of days," Gibbons said.
