TORONTO -- The Blue Jays announced Friday that the team will recall right-hander Drew Hutchison from Triple-A Buffalo to make a spot start in Sunday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics.
Toronto entered Friday's series opener against Oakland leading the American League with 106 innings from its starting pitchers, and the club wanted to ease the workload of its starting staff -- most notably young starters Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez.
The move will give Toronto's regular rotation an extra day of rest, with Stroman now slated to start the first game of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Monday night at Rogers Centre.
Hutchison was the Blue Jays' Opening Day starter in 2015 and went 13-5, but he struggled to an ERA of 5.57 and was held off the team's postseason roster. The 25-year-old competed for one of the final spots in Toronto's rotation during Spring Training but lost out to Sanchez. Hutchison has made three starts for Buffalo this season, going 0-1 with a 4.11 ERA over 15 1/3 innings.
The Blue Jays will announce a roster move over the weekend to make room on the 25-man roster for Hutchison. It is expected that either switch-pitcher Pat Venditte or the recently recalled Chad Girodo will head to Buffalo.
