Tulo placed on DL with right quad strain

May 28th, 2016

TORONTO -- Troy Tulowitzki's difficult 2016 campaign continued on Saturday, as the Blue Jays' shortstop was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right quadriceps strain.
Tulowitzki injured his quad while stealing second base in the Blue Jays' 6-0 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday. He proceeded to miss the next two games before returning to the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Red Sox.
The veteran shortstop underwent an MRI on Saturday morning, with the results showing a low-grade strain, and Tulowitzki believes he will be back in the lineup after the mandatory 15-day period. The Santa Clara, Calif., native said he didn't feel like himself during Friday's outing, finishing 0-for-4 with a career-high-tying four strikeouts and picking up an error on a routine grounder in the second inning.
"I think it came time to decide whether to keep going after it and possibly injuring myself or put me on the DL, and I think that was the [right] choice," Tulowitzki said.
"It's tough. You could rest it and maybe get better in a week or so, but then you have to play with a man down, and that's not the right thing to do either, so that was the decision. It's a tough one and its unfortunate. Obviously Id rather be out there, but it is what it is."

Toronto is expected to rotate infielders Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney at shortstop until Tulowitzki is ready to return, with Devon Travis handling duties at second.
The Blue Jays activated left-hander Aaron Loup from the 15-day DL to take Tulowitzki's spot on the roster. Loup has yet to appear in a big league game this season after he strained the flexor tendon in his left elbow during Spring Training. He spent the last four seasons as a mainstay in Toronto's bullpen, accumulating a 3.11 ERA with 176 strikeouts in 211 career innings.
The Blue Jays had been carrying only six relievers for the past three contests, and Loup will provide manager John Gibbons an additional option against tough left-handed hitters.
With left-handers Brett Cecil (torn lat muscle) and Franklin Morales (left shoulder fatigue) still on the mend, Loup joins fellow lefty Chad Girodo in Toronto's bullpen.
