Dickerson adds to coaching role with 3B duty

January 29th, 2021

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres unveiled their 2021 coaching staff on Friday, and the only change is an expected one.

Bench coach Bobby Dickerson will assume the role of third-base coach vacated when longtime Padres third-base coach Glenn Hoffman moved into the team's front office earlier this winter.

Aside from that, manager Jayce Tingler's staff remains unchanged. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild and hitting coach Damion Easley enter their second seasons in their respective roles.

The Padres retained Dickerson's title as bench coach, meaning he is technically listed as the team's bench coach/third-base coach. But those are semantics. Associate manager Skip Schumaker has essentially taken on the role of bench coach, as Tingler's right-hand man for in-game strategy and decisions. Schumaker returns for his fourth season in a coaching role and his sixth with the organization.

Dickerson played an important role in working with the team's infielders, and he'll continue in that capacity. Across the diamond, Wayne Kirby remains as first-base coach. Ben Fritz enters year two as bullpen coach, while Rod Barajas -- in his eighth year with the organization -- enters his second season as catching and quality control coach.

The 2020-21 offseason saw the lowest turnover rate on the staff in recent memory for the Padres, and it's easy to see why. San Diego broke through and reached the postseason in 2020, and the players raved about their coaches from top to bottom. It wasn't broke; the Padres didn't intend to fix it.

Still, it's worth noting the continuity on Tingler's staff. The second-year skipper saw only one departure after a successful debut campaign. Schumaker interviewed for multiple managerial openings but ultimately returned to San Diego.

Already this offseason, the Padres have made their share of big-time moves, adding pitchers , and , and infielder . On paper, it looks like the most talented San Diego roster this century.

The Padres felt they already had the coaching staff in place to make the most of it.
