Pipeline Preview: Wilson looks to stay scoreless for Rome

August 19th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: (Blue Jays' No. 3), New Hampshire vs. Altoona (6:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Alford, MLBPipeline.com's No. 49 overall prospect, enters the weekend riding a nine-game hitting streak, during which he's posted a .375 average with seven runs scored, six RBIs and three stolen bases. The 23-year-old outfielder appeared in parts of four games with the Blue Jays in May, only to suffer a broken hamate bone in his hand and land on the disabled list for roughly six weeks. Alford and the Fisher Cats will suit up for a doubleheader on Saturday after the team's Friday night contest was postponed due to rain.

Pitcher to watch: Bryse Wilson (Braves' No. 22), Rome at Columbia (5:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Wilson will attempt to record his fourth straight scoreless start on Saturday when he takes the mound for Class A Rome. The 19-year-old righty, a fourth-round Draft pick in 2016, has held opposing hitters to a .167 average in that span while posting 23 strikeouts against seven walks in 18 2/3 innings. One of the South Atlantic League's top hurlers this season, Wilson has a 2.36 ERA and 120 strikeouts, which rank second and third in the circuit, respectively.
Duel of the day: Yadier Alvarez (Dodgers' No. 3) vs. (Padres' No. 13), Tulsa vs. San Antonio (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Alvarez, No. 51 on the Top 100, has yet to get his footing in the Texas League, where he's posted a 3.57 ERA but also a 1.98 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings (four starts) with Double-A Tulsa. The hard-throwing righty has continued to miss bats but also struggled mightily with his control, compiling 21 strikeouts against 18 walks.

De Los Santos carried a no-hit bid for 7 1/3 innings before allowing one earned run on one hit in eight innings in his last start for Double-A San Antonio. After an inconsistent first half while adjusting to the Texas League, the 21-year-old right-hander has settled in to go 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and a 60-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio over nine second-half starts totaling 59 2/3 innings.
