SAN DIEGO -- Braves first baseman Matt Adams was encouraged when an X-ray revealed he did not suffer a fracture when he fouled a pitch off the top of his left foot during the second inning of Thursday night's 6-0 loss to the Padres at Petco Park.
But Atlanta's manager Brian Snitker seemed only cautiously optimistic when he said he would have to wait until Friday to gain a sense of how significant or insignificant the left foot contusion might be. For now, Adams is considered questionable for Friday night's series opener against the A's in Oakland.
"I won't know until tomorrow," Snitker said. "So, it's kind of good we're playing at night, so he'll have all day. When he gets there, we'll check him out."
Adams fouled Dinelson Lamet's 0-2 pitch off his left foot. He stepped out of the batter's box, briefly took a knee and then composed himself before striking out against the hard-throwing right-hander.
After gingerly making his way back toward the Braves' dugout, Adams was evaluated and removed from the game. Jace Peterson took over at first base when the bottom of the second inning began.
Adams entered Thursday hitting .296 with 12 homers and a .968 OPS in 36 games since the Braves acquired him from the Cardinals on May 20. His success has led Freddie Freeman to plan on playing third base when he attempts to return from the disabled list next week.
If Adams did sustain an injury that could sideline him for a significant stretch, Freeman would return to the first base position once he is cleared to play.
