Braves prospect Weigel undergoes TJ surgery

June 28th, 2017

SAN DIEGO -- Braves pitching prospect Patrick Weigel's rapid rise toward the Major League level was halted Tuesday, when he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Dr. James Andrews performed the surgical procedure on Weigel, who has been on Triple-A Gwinnett's disabled list since experiencing right elbow discomfort during his June 18 start against Columbus. The 22-year-old hurler tweeted that he opted to have the surgery "after much deliberation."
Weigel was promoted from Double-A Mississippi to Gwinnett in the middle of May. He allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of the eight starts made at Triple-A and had a 1.21 ERA over a five-start stretch from May 24-June 13.

Since being selected by the Braves in the seventh round of 2015 MLB Draft, Weigel had steadily improved his stock. MLBPipeline ranks him as the No. 15 prospect in the Braves' system.
