TORONTO -- Just one day after Ryan Dull was optioned, he's back with the A's in Toronto.
The A's placed starter Brett Anderson on the 10-day disabled list prior to Saturday afternoon's game in Toronto with a left shoulder strain. Anderson was forced out of Friday's game after just one inning.
"We'll see how he responds in the coming days," said manager Bob Melvin. "Hopefully we caught it sooner, and he was smart enough to know not to push it and come out."
Dull pitched two-thirds of an inning in the series opener on Thursday, using 25 pitches, and was optioned back to Triple-A Nashville with a 6.30 ERA. He hadn't left Toronto yet, though, giving the A's an easy way to fill out the roster on short notice.
"He pitched two days in a row, so I don't know if I would consider him a long man today," Melvin said. "But I think anybody who can actually make their way out to the mound today, after [the bullpen] covering 14 2/3 is useful."
Oakland's bullpen effort on Friday was led by Josh Lucas, who pitched 3 2/3 innings and struck out seven. Lucas was close to missing first pitch, too, as he got stuck in Toronto traffic on his way in from the airport.
"I'm glad his flight wasn't 45 minutes later," Melvin said. "Like I said last night, he literally just got down to the bullpen."
