DENVER -- Brett Sullivan and the Rockies weren’t going to get inched out of Wednesday afternoon’s game.
With the team trailing the Orioles in the bottom of the ninth by one run, a towering Hunter Goodman drive was ruled and confirmed foul, and Cole Carrigg’s two-out drive to left-center was a finger’s width from a home run but ended up a double.
But Zac Veen pinch-hit and doubled in Carrigg for the tying run to force extra innings, and Brett Sullivan delivered the winning two-run single in the bottom of the 11th for a 6-5 victory that handed the Rockies their first series triumph since Aug. 14-16 at San Francisco.
It was a satisfying end to a series that began with a 2-1 loss on Monday night when Colton Cowser leaped and pulled back a Jake McCarthy drive that was headed over the center-field wall and prevented a two-run walk-off homer.
The Orioles scored twice in the top of the 11th against righty reliever Blas Castaño, but his team delivered his second Major League win. TJ Rumfield’s leadoff RBI single and Adael Amador’s two-out, ground-rule double set up Sullivan -- who delivered on a 2-2 pitch, left-on-left from Grant Wolfram.
