Brewers call up No. 3 prospect Joey Wiemer

April 1st, 2023

CHICAGO -- After giving him a good, long look for the Opening Day roster, the Brewers called up outfield prospect to the big leagues one game into the regular season.

Wiemer, MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 Brewers prospect and the No. 90 prospect in baseball, was promoted on Thursday from Triple-A Nashville before playing a single game there.

The promotion comes in response to third baseman injuring his left hamstring in the ninth inning of the Brewers’ Opening Day loss to the Cubs. Urías was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Friday. To make room on the roster for Wiemer, left-hander Justin Wilson was transferred to the 60-day IL.

The Brewers will likely move from right field, where he played Opening Day, to third base. That would open right for Wiemer, who impressed the Brewers during Spring Training while getting extensive playing time with Tyron Taylor down with an elbow injury and fellow outfield prospect Sal Frelick playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

Wiemer, 24, was Milwaukee’s fourth-round Draft pick in 2020 and has an .872 OPS in his first two Minor League seasons.
