MILWAUKEE -- After passing on the available prep outfielders at No. 9 overall in the MLB Draft on Monday night, the Brewers snagged one at No. 34.
That's where Milwaukee selected Tristen Lutz, a 6-foot-3, right-handed power hitter from Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. Lutz, who taken in Competitive Balance Round A, was the second of Milwaukee's three Draft picks on Day 1, after the Brewers took UC Irvine second baseman Keston Hiura in the first round at No. 9 overall.

"He's got big power," said Brewers scouting director Tod Johnson of Lutz. "Super athletic, super physical. We were pretty excited to get him there."
Lutz has a scholarship offer to Texas, but his prominent Draft position suggests the Brewers believe strongly they can sign him. Lutz joins a long list of high school outfielders drafted high by the Brewers in recent years, including 2015 first-round pick Trent Clark from nearby Fort Worth.
KJ Hendricks, the Brewers' area scout who recommended Clark, was also on Lutz.

"I've always had a good amount of power, it's just the consistency of it," Lutz told the Dallas Morning News. "My freshman and sophomore year, I'd hit home runs, but I only had four or five. But I've been working on my swing a lot and being able to consistently barrel the ball and create backspin has been really what has really made my home run numbers increase a little bit over the past few years."
Johnson said the Brewers believe Lutz has the speed to play center field, but if he does move, he fits the profile of a right fielder. The Brewers love center fielders, who represent at least six and as many as eight of the team's current Top 30 Prospects, depending on how one characterizes a couple of them. Lutz batted .432 (41-for-95) with 10 home runs during his senior season.
"We'll give him a chance to stick in center, for sure," Johnson said.
