MILWAUKEE -- Brewers catcher Jett Bandy has a fractured rib and will land on the 10-day disabled list before Friday's opener of a three-game series at Tampa Bay.
When the Brewers' other catcher, Manny Pina, appeared behind the plate for the start of the ninth inning of Thursday's 2-1 win over the Cardinals at Miller Park, it appeared the move was for defense. But Brewers manager Craig Counsell said later that Bandy had aggravated what he thought was a bruised rib on a swing in the eighth inning, and an X-ray revealed the fracture.
"We're not sure, but there was a hit by pitch a couple of days ago," Counsell said, referring to an errant John Lackey pitch in Sunday's loss to the Cubs. "I had the same injury, where you get hit by a pitch and you think it's just a bruise. It might be from that."
Bandy said he is not sure of the severity of the fracture or how much time he is expected to miss going forward, but the 27-year-old catcher is sure getting hit didn't help.
"I'm sure it had something to do it," Bandy said. "It just felt like any other time you get hit by a pitch, it's just a little achy. It got achier and achier, and a couple swings really flared it up." 
The Brewers did not immediately make a roster move, but they will need a backup catcher when Bandy is placed on the DL. With Stephen Vogt still working back from a left knee injury -- he expects to take batting practice on the field for the first time on Friday -- the only other healthy catcher on Milwaukee's 40-man roster is Andrew Susac, the former Giants backstop who has appeared in parts of three seasons in the Major Leagues.
Susac reported to Spring Training to compete with Bandy and Pina for the Opening Day roster, but was knocked out of the battle with a neck injury. He has a .205/.307/.404 slash line in 202 plate appearances with Triple-A Colorado Springs.
