Julio Mendez, an infielder for the Arizona League Brewers affiliate, is in critical but stable condition after being hit by a pitch on Saturday, the big league club announced Sunday afternoon.

Mendez experienced a cardiac event after being struck on a ball thrown by the Angels' Austin Krzeminksi in the ninth inning of the contest, which was called off immediately after the incident.

Mendez was treated on the field and later taken to a local hospital where he is currently resting.

"All of our thoughts and prayers are with Julio and his family," said Brewers general manager David Stearns. "We will provide updates as soon as we know more."

Mendez, 20, has been with the Brewers' organization since 2014. He is a career .241 hitter, with 27 doubles 58 RBIs in 182 games across four seasons in the Minor Leagues.

"Obviously, we're thinking about him and our thoughts are with him and his family," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said before Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. "It's obviously a very scary situation, and we're thinking about him. He's in very serious condition."
