PITTSBURGH -- Brewers catcher Stephen Vogt began making a mental checklist moments after his collision at home plate with Pirates starter Chad Kuhl.
Did he hold on to the ball to get the out? Yes, he did. Did he know where he was? Also affirmative. What about his knee and neck? That's where he started noticing problems.
"I was like, 'Man, my neck hurts,' and then I realized my knee hurts," Vogt said after the game Monday. "You just kind of take an inventory."
Vogt exited the Brewers' 4-2 loss to the Pirates on Monday in the fifth inning after recording the out of Kuhl. On Tuesday, the veteran catcher was placed on the 10-day disablied list with a strained MCL in his left knee.
"His neck is going to be just a little sore, but I am more concerned about the knee," Counsell said Monday. "It was a pretty good collision. He said right away that his knee and his neck were bugging him."
With runners on first and second and one out, Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli singled to right field, where Domingo Santana gathered it and fired the ball home to Vogt. Pirates third-base coach Joey Cora waved home Kuhl from second base, and Santana's throw brought Vogt up the third-base line and off the plate.
Kuhl's left arm appeared to catch Vogt's helmet as he slid, and both players went down. Vogt remarkably held onto the ball, and Kuhl was called out.
"He had one foot right on the corner of the plate, so I tried to go around him," Kuhl said. "I wanted to do a little hook slide, touch home plate. As soon as he caught it, he kind of came into my running lane. It just happened like that.
"I wasn't expecting to be sent, but I was going full speed and trying to make a play and trying to score a run and trying to win a ballgame."
Kuhl got up slowly and walked off the field on his own, remaining in the game to record two outs in the sixth before being removed, but Vogt remained on his back near the plate. He eventually sat up then got to his feet as trainers from both clubs attended to him. He walked off the field through the Pirates dugout.
"I was pretty with it out there, so I think that was good for me." Vogt said. "Obviously you never know. Those things happen so fast, and you don't know what got hit and what didn't. Fortunately I am OK and nothing serious [was injured]. Hopefully this is just a couple of days and I get right back at it."
When Vogt descended the dugout stairs, one of the first people to greet him was Kuhl, who offered a few words and a quick hug.
"He actually came into the doctor's office when he came out of the game and checked on me. That was very nice of him," Vogt said. "Obviously nobody is out there trying to hurt each other. It's part of the game. But I was very thankful he came over and asked me how I was doing. That meant a lot."
Vogt was replaced behind the plate by Manny Pina, while Kuhl remained in the game.
