Double-A Biloxi loses Game 5 of finals
Here’s a look at the top performances of the past week by Brewers prospects in the Minor Leagues:
Sunday, Sept. 15: Shuckers lose in Game 5 of finals
The Biloxi Shuckers lost in a pivotal Game 5 matchup with Jackson, falling 6-2 in the contest Sunday and losing the Southern League Championship Series 3-2.
The Brewers’ Double-A affiliate started the game off with a first-inning run courtesy of a Weston Wilson RBI single but would not score again until the ninth inning. No. 13 prospect Drew Rasmussen only got one out in the first inning, allowing five runs and exiting the game. The Shuckers’ bullpen then tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball, but the offense could not overcome the early deficit. Sunday's prospect stats »
Saturday, Sept. 14: Shuckers force Game 5 in finals
Fighting to extend its season, Double-A Biloxi topped Jackson, 4-2, in Game 4 of the Southern League Finals to force a winner-take-all Game 5 on Sunday.
Biloxi wasted no time jumping out in front as it scratched across a run in the first inning, scoring on a passed ball. Mario Feliciano, the Brewers’ No. 9 prospect, drove in a career-best 81 runs over 119 games in the regular season and picked up another RBI via a base hit in the third.
The Shuckers scored another run in each of the next two innings and that turned out to be more than enough as the pitching staff put forth a solid performance of its own.
Cameron Roegner, a 22nd-round pick from the 2016 Draft, struggled with command a bit and issued four walks over his 4 1/3 innings, but he limited the damage to just one earned run (two runs total) before passing off to a quartet of relievers, who combined to throw 4 2/3 scoreless frames. Friday, Sept. 13: Biloxi facing elimination in Southern League finals
Bowden Francis was solid on the mound, but Double-A Biloxi’s offense couldn’t get anything going and eventually fell, 2-0, to Jackson in Game 3 of the Southern League Championship Series.
Francis, a seventh-round pick from the 2017 MLB Draft, threw 80 pitches (56 strikes) and gave up five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander also gave up two runs and struck out five in his final start of 2019. During the regular season Francis reached the Double-A level for the first time in his career and went 7-8 with a 3.99 ERA over 25 appearances (24 starts, 128 2/3 innings).

Wednesday, Sept. 11: Biloxi loses Game 2 in late collapse
Double-A Biloxi received another excellent playoff start from Dylan File, but the Shuckers’ bullpen allowed four ninth-inning runs to drop Game 2 of the Southern League Championship Series to Jackson, 6-2. The two teams have split the first two games of the best-of-five series. File, a 23-year-old right-hander, matched his season-high total by racking up nine strikeouts over six innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits and pounded the strike zone with 62 of his 88 pitches. He also picked up his first career hit -- a line-drive single to right field in the third inning. File fell two outs shy of a complete game in his first playoff start, tossing a career-high 8 1/3 innings of two-hit ball to lead Biloxi past Pensacola in Game 2 of the Southern League semifinals. Tuesday, Sept. 10: Shuckers win Game 1 of finals
Six players recorded multiple hits on Tuesday as Double-A Biloxi used a 16-hit attack to defeat Jackson, 9-7, in Game 1 of the Southern League finals -- a best-of-five series.
Center fielder Luis Aviles Jr. served as a spark plug by going 5-for-5 with a solo homer and four runs scored from atop the lineup, and C.J. Hinojosa and Jake Gatewood both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the victory. Cooper Hummel, Bruce Caldwell and Joantgel Segovia round out the group of Shuckers who finished with multiple hits.
Two-way standout Clayton Andrews delivered a pair of scoreless innings out of the Shuckers’ bullpen to earn the win. He scattered two singles and struck out a pair. Tuesday's prospect stats »
