Shaw remains in Milwaukee after birth of child

Brewers recall Phillips from Triple-A to take third baseman's roster spot

June 10th, 2017

PHOENIX -- Brewers third baseman has been placed on the family medical emergency list so he could remain in Milwaukee to be with his wife, Lindy, who gave birth to the couple's first child earlier this week.
"Travis had a baby girl on Tuesday," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said ahead of Friday's opener vs. the D-backs. "There's some health concerns with the baby. He's going to be away from the team through Sunday for sure.
"Hopefully he'll join us in St. Louis, but we'll see. So that's where we're at. He needs to be with his family."
The club did not disclose the nature of the baby's health concerns. Shaw, who played the last two games for the Brewers since the birth, can miss anywhere from three to seven days on the medical emergency list. The Brewers travel from here to St. Louis for a four-game series, beginning on Tuesday that includes a Tuesday doubleheader.
He was replaced on the 25-man roster by outfielder , who was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs and was in the lineup, batting seventh and playing center field on Friday night.
Shaw had already spent three days out on paternity leave to be with his wife for the birth. He has had a good opening couple of months with a slash line of .298/.352/.534 along with 10 homers, a team-high 42 RBIs and an .886 OPS in 53 games. He went 3-for-6 as the Brewers split the most recent two games with the Giants at Miller Park.
"It's just a situation where he needs to be at home," Counsell said. "And he's in the right place right now. We're certainly all thinking about him. But he's where he should be."
