MILWAUKEE -- Brewers reliever Will Smith, attempting a non-surgical comeback from a torn ligament in his right knee, participated in pitchers' fielding practice Tuesday in another significant test. After covering first base and practicing pickoffs with no issues, Smith took part in agility drills in the outfield. He is scheduled for an extended, 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday that includes a break in the middle to simulate pitching multiple innings. If Smith passes that test, he would face hitters next. After that, he could be cleared for a Minor League rehabilitation assignment. "The throwing has been fine, so now it's, 'Can I field my position?'" Smith said. "I am over the DL. I'm going crazy." Last call • Left-hander Michael Kirkman, designated for assignment by the Brewers last week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Kirkman had the right of refusal, but told his Twitter followers he was "SkySox bound." Kirkman made only one appearance for the Brewers before they removed him from the roster in the wake of a trade with Tampa Bay for reliever Jhan Marinez.
• Before returning to the lineup after a two-game absence for a sore right wrist, Ryan Braun spoke to a crowd of Habitat for Humanity volunteers on Tuesday at the launch of the organization's summer building season. Braun and the Brewers Community Foundation are sponsoring one of 10 new homes in Milwaukee this year.
