MIAMI -- Wily Peralta pitched well in his first start back from paternity leave, a 4-1 loss to the Marlins, lasting six innings while scattering 10 hits and allowing just two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two.
The right-hander's wife, Denny, gave birth last Thursday to a baby girl, Ciara. It is the couple's second child.
Peralta's night ended by escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. After an error by Jonathan Villar and an RBI single by Adeiny Hechavarria, Peralta got Marlins starter Jose Fernandez to ground into a double play, ending the inning and his night.
"Even after [Villar's] error, he made a lot of tough pitches after that and limited the damage right there," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.
Peralta yielded runs in the second and sixth innings. He said the extra days off had no effect one way or the other.
"No, I just feel the same," Peralta said. "I don't think it made any difference. I felt pretty good. Overall I thought I did OK"
It was another step forward in a season that started with losses in his first three outings. Peralta entered Monday night with a 7.50 ERA and ended with a 6.75 ERA.
"Today, I think I had all three of my pitches working," Peralta said. "I was throwing down a little bit more today, and [I was] consistent with my three pitches."
Still beaming over the latest addition to the family, Peralta has had an eventful last couple of days.
"It's been an exciting week for me," he said. "Yesterday was Mother's Day. Now I've got a daughter. It's a lot going on. But I'm happy to be back with the team and glad to be on the mound."
