MIAMI -- Zach Davies needed something good to happen on Tuesday night. The odds were certainly against him and the Brewers, facing Marlins starter Adam Conley, who threw 7 2/3 innings of no-hit ball the last time he faced the Crew.
But maybe things are starting to turn around for Davies. His team gave him plenty of run support and knocked out Conley after four innings, coming away with a convincing 10-2 win, evening the three-game series.
Davies went five innings, allowing five hits and just two runs. He walked three and struck out one. Of his 82 pitches, 43 were strikes.
"He got through his five innings," manager Craig Counsell said. "He was behind a bunch of hitters. I just thought he had to work to get through those five innings. I know he put up a zero in the fifth, but I thought it was time to go to somebody else."
Davies was just happy to finally put a mark in the win column.
"It was great to get the first [win] out of the way," Davies said. "Kind of get the monkey off my back and go through the next few starts and become the pitcher that I've been in the past."
Davies did have to labor through the outing at times. He got the Marlins in order in just one of his five innings.
"I caught some trouble right there in the middle of the game but made a small adjustment and got through the fourth and fifth [innings]," Davies said. "You want to get through six, seven innings, but I'll take it this time around."
The right-hander said he wasn't concerned about being relieved after only five innings.
"That's not my decision," Davies said. "I tried to give it my best in the last couple of innings and hopefully get into the sixth, but it just wasn't there for this game."
He now looks to build on his first win of the season, a victory that will hopefully put him in the right direction going forward.
"Making some adjustments and getting some positive feedbacks from those adjustments," Davies said of his recent outings. "Still, between each start there's always work to do."
