BOSTON -- While the future leader of baseball operations for the Red Sox is still in limbo, a steady longtime presence with the club will stay on board.

Brian O’Halloran, who joined the Red Sox in 2002 and served as general manager under chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, is moving into the role of executive vice president of baseball operations.

The news was first reported by The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed it in his Friday afternoon news conference.

The Red Sox are likely to wait until their full front-office structure is in place before outlining O’Halloran’s duties in his new role.

“[This is good],” said Cora. “I talked to him yesterday. I talked to him during the week. It felt like that was gonna be the case. He’s an experienced guy who has been here forever. He’s been through the good times and the bad times. Obviously, it’s a different role, but I’m glad he’s going to be a part of this.”

Assistant general manager Eddie Romero has been the point man on roster moves while the team searches for Bloom’s successor.

Assistant general manager Raquel Ferreira is also staying on in her role.

The Red Sox don’t have a timetable for naming their new leader of baseball operations, but team president/CEO Sam Kennedy said last week the search would be an exhaustive one.

O’Halloran, a native of Weymouth, Mass., has served in a variety of roles in his over two decades with Boston.

He started as a baseball operations assistant in 2002 and worked as the director of baseball operations under Theo Epstein from 2006-10. O’Halloran was promoted to assistant general manager when Ben Cherington became the club’s GM prior to the ’12 season. He stayed in that role before Bloom promoted O’Halloran to general manager in October 2019.
