Small ball works for NY until bullpen wilts

July 23rd, 2021

BOSTON -- The Yankees went as far as their temporary identity could take them on this night, more resembling “Burners” than “Bombers.” Timely hits, stolen bases, a bunt and sacrifice flies set the stage for another victory over the Red Sox, but they couldn’t overcome bullpen meltdowns in back-to-back innings.

One out away from a save, surrendered a game-tying two-run double to Kiké Hernández before made history in a nightmarish 10th as the Yankees notched a new contender for their worst loss of the season, falling, 5-4, to the Red Sox in 10 innings on Thursday night at Fenway Park.

“I’m still pretty sick to my stomach right now,” said starter , who fired 5 2/3 scoreless innings before exiting in line for the win. “It’s just a tough one. We felt like we had a good chance to win it. We just kind of lost it.”

Green grooved a fastball that Hernández pounded to left-center field. Kriske was unable to find the strike zone, becoming the first pitcher ever to throw four wild pitches in an extra inning, according to STATS. No pitcher has thrown more than four in any inning.

Hunter Renfroe’s sacrifice fly tipped the scales as the Yanks’ winning streak stalled at four games.

“It’s not fun,” said Kriske. “There’s a lot of guys battling their butts off. It sucks to be the one to blow it for the team.”

The Yankees have four losses this season when leading by multiple runs in the ninth inning, their most since 1979 -- a season in which closer Rich “Goose” Gossage missed significant time, having shattered his right thumb brawling in the shower with catcher/designated hitter Cliff Johnson.

“We’ve had some incredibly tough losses like tonight,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Time and time again, the guys have bounced back. That’s what we expect to do tomorrow.”

The Yanks once again struggled to support Montgomery, who entered the contest having tied a franchise record with five straight starts of zero runs behind him. ’ fourth-inning RBI groundout offered Montgomery the slimmest of margins, all New York notched off right-hander Tanner Houck.

Montgomery settled for a no-decision despite another solid performance, returning to the mound after a 55-minute rain delay halted play in the top of the fifth inning.

“Every time I’m out there, I really believe we’re going to win,” said Montgomery, who held the Red Sox to three hits while walking one and striking out six. “We win a lot of my games. I’m always going to give us a chance.”

recorded two key outs in his Yankees debut, but Boston took advantage of shaky defense to tie the game against Lucas Luetge in the seventh. Alex Verdugo reached when Torres bobbled an infield single. After a hit, Tyler Wade flubbed a Michael Chavis grounder that loaded the bases, setting up Hernandez’s sac fly -- received flat-footed in center field by Estevan Florial.

The Yanks answered with two runs in the eighth off Adam Ottavino, embracing small ball. DJ LeMahieu walked, stole second and scored as Statcast king Giancarlo Stanton blooped a 76.2 mph single into left-center field. Rougned Odor dropped a sac bunt, and Torres lifted a sac fly that gave New York a 3-1 lead.

Though Luis Cessa retired the side on five pitches in the eighth inning, Boone said there was no temptation to keep the right-hander in. Instead, the call went to Green, who allowed a couple of singles and notched two outs before Hernandez’s big hit went to the wall.

“I actually thought he threw the ball really well tonight,” Boone said of Green. “I thought he was crisp. I just thought they put really good swings on him.”

Brett Gardner’s 10th-inning sac fly off Matt Barnes put New York back in front, but Boone found the bullpen cupboard empty, populated by toasted relievers in need of a breather. That prompted the uncomfortable mound meeting in the 10th, with catcher Rob Brantly attempting in vain to settle Kriske’s nerves.

“There’s no doubt about it: That’s a tough loss right there,” Brantly said. “It’s a tough way to lose, especially battling the whole way. Monty threw an absolute great game. The bottom line is, we’re going to have another game tomorrow. We’re going to have to regroup, get ourselves together and go right back after them.”
