SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Giants have acquired right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson from the Texas Rangers along with cash considerations in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Bobby Evans announced today.
Dyson, 29, had a 1-6 record over 17 relief appearances with Texas this season, allowing 23 runs (20 earned runs) in 16.2 innings. Dyson emerged as the closer in Texas just one year ago, posting a 2.43 ERA in 70.1 innings while recording 38 saves, the third-most in the American League. Originally acquired in a July 31, 2015 trade with the Miami Marlins, he compiled a 2.04 ERA spanning 104 appearances with Texas in 2015-16, converting 40 of 45 (88.9%) save chances with 22 holds.
Dyson was one of the top relievers for World Baseball Classic champion Team USA this spring, going 1-0 while tossing 6.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in five games (6.0ip, 0h, 0r, 0er, 0hr, 0bb, 4so).
Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 2010 draft, Dyson has appeared in 203 Major League games with Toronto (2012), Miami (2013-2015) and Texas (2015-2017), compiling a record of 12-15 with a 3.54 ERA along with 40 saves.
The Giants have transferred left-handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Dyson on the 40-man roster. Bumgarner has been on the disabled list for the past 46 days with a left shoulder strain.
